Education Initiatives

An important goal for NESCent is to better communicate the current research in evolutionary biology and to highlight how this work benefits society.  One important aspect of this goal is to provide educators with resources to convey the excitment and practical applications of evolution.  The Education and Outreach Group is working on several projects to develop these resources.

Organized by Sam Donovan, this working group will focus on increasing student understanding of a fundamental tool of evolutionary biologists.

Organized by Judy Scotchmoor, Gordon Uno, Jay Labov and Adam Fagen, this group will promote the development and adoption of evolutionary examples across the biology curriculum.

The Evolution Education Working Group met to discuss national issues in evolution education at the undergraduate level.

This NESCent funded working group is lead by John Jungck and Sam Donovan, and in conjunction with BioQUEST, is developing educational laboratory modules based on actual research databases.

NESCent, the American Institute of Biological Sciences and the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study co-sponsor an Evolution Symposium at the annual National Association of Biology Teachers conference.  This day long symposium focuses on a different topic in evolutionary biology each year and features presentations by leading researchers.
